10:00am

EMAIL CHECK:

Lindsey Buck (Lee's Brothers Wife)

What a NERD!

think your egg box is missing you ;)

hope ur having fun, junior's jealous.

love you both xoxoxo

Lindsey... I think you are right... my Xbox is missing me:

Tonytiges XBOX360:

tonytiges' Xbox - 2/6/2007

I could have used some gaming yesterday... I mean who couldn't? Gaming is like air... ok maybe not air... maybe more like pizza... regardless there was no pizza yesterday.

tonytiges' Xbox - 2/4/2007

If tonytiges was a true gamer, he would have played yesterday, but he decided to do something else instead. he better not have another console... If you knew you were going to lose your 15 day streak like you did would you have played?

Ahh well....expect lots of pictures of furry animals later..... (and no... I'm not off to the crazy horse).

------------------------------------------------------

10:30
sat down for breakfast just down the main shopping mall at 'beehive corner'.. Which is adelaides busiest corner.

Above: Beehive Corner
i'm confronted with the menu. On there is an oysters section where for $22.50 (10ukp) u can have oysters kilpatrick; the australian classic with bacon and worcestershire bbq sauce.
think i'll just have a ham and cheese croissant. We finish up and walk down north terrace (the main road across the north of the city which has most of the museums and art galleries on it) towards adelaide zoo.

12:30
Adelaide zoo(pictures here)is nestled in the botanical gardens in the north of adelaide. Its a 15 minute walk from the hotel, and is quite cheap.. A mere $18 (7ukp?). Its a small zoo probably the same size as london zoo... Much smaller than sydney zoo and aussie zoo up in queensland. The zoo has, on loan from sydney zoo, two female gorillas, a fact that a zoo guide proudly proclaimed as we entered the zoo. We made our way to the far side of the zoo to watch the sea lions being fed. We'd seen such shows in the usa and up in aussie zoo, and usually the feeder would, as he was feeding the animal, explain a little about the creature... Not here. The guy came in with his bucket, threw the fish around and promptly left... No explanations no talking. We walked round the rest of the zoo, taking in all the animals..Then, on leaving the zoo we walked the length of the north side of the city over to the train station. Above the train station is the casino, and next to these on the river torrens is the festival center. This gave us a great view of the oval on the otherside of the river (below).

Scattered around the festical center is some random artwork, all explained by a little plaque next to it.

Below: This piece of 'artwork' was err.... interesting.... as the plaque explains,,,,

Above: the open arty space next to the festival center

18:30
i'm sunburnt.... Only a little.. But sunburnt all the same. Only on the hair line where i'm receading.
we returned to the hotel around 4pm... Had a shower (it was around 26'c but there was no breeze like yesterday so it felt quite hot), and watched a bit of telly. Lee fought bravely in keeping me awake... And i used most of her tricks of the trade in fooling her in thinking i was 'just resting my eyes'.
Anyway, we got up and went down to a restaurant next to the casino called north. its a nice restaurant with a range of fantastic wines. We settled for a pinot from nearby adelaide hills. We'd both been flagging in the afternoon, espacially me, so we ended up back at the hotel, and after watching the news.... I fell asleep

------------------------------------------------------

General observations
Cans of drink, mainly softdrinks, are 375ml rather than our european 330ml. This may just be a local thing tho...
Not many restaurants are open late... People seem to eat dinner quite early.. Either that or they like us new arriving pomes to suffer the dietry horrors of places like 'the austalian pizza house'.
Adelaide has an alarming amount of wig shops.
Television; we'll split this into two sections;
actual program content; heavily influenced by the uk and america. Lots of programs from both country's.... Like lost, top gear, csi, little britain etc.... Morning shows seem to be more gmtv or kcla (la's version of gmtv) and less bbc... Also through the night u can get the english sky news on one of the channels....
adverts; of the 'mikes carpets variety'. All channels have advert breaks like america... And the adverts are pretty poor as well.. Just like america. In fact it makes watching sky seem a more fluid experience...
Shops: most jewellers claim to be built on an 'original underground open gem mine'.
Woolworths sells booze and groceries....
There are simularities with shopping centres back home...lee and i are split on this... As she thinks its more hemel hempstead and i think it more watford. There are alot of jewellers, chocolate shops shoe shops..and as i've already chronicalled.. Wig shops... (I'll question our new aussie friends about this if i see them later).

Above: One of the numerous wig shops

Some shops apply the speaker and microphone approach, something i'd only seen at butchers and electrical shops when i was a kid back in the uk. If your not sure what i mean, this is when an employee of the shop will stand at the entrance of their shop and speak about the 'bargans' they have in their shop. I've seen this applied to perfume shops and clothes shops over here....
If u happen to find a spot in the city which has some buzzing flies around.. They do become relentless... Lukily the strong breeze we have had has kept them away.
Walking around adelaide i've also noticed something about the buildings... No two are alike. Each building is a unique size and colour... As if each building was built in a differnet era. Walking along north terrace, we noticed that u'd get a large skyscraper of a building, then a small restaurant, then an office block of medium size, then a small insignificant building. It makes the 'skyline' very muddled.....

Above and below: Adelaide is 'cobbled' together with random buildings of all shapes and sizes
